Comments on Australasian Intelligent Speed Adaptation Initiative - Big Road Brother
Surveillance is one thing; automated ticketing another. But actually stopping a vehicle automatically? (Read the complete story)

"malicious people could hack into the system (probably) and make the car stop...which could lead to kidnapping..robbery, etc, etc"
(gid 1/13/2008 8:30:25 PM)
"Gid, that's exactly what I was thinking...and on top of THAT, some of these "malicious" people are some cops and other law enforcement themselves...*smh* Scary thought."
(M. 1/15/2008 5:26:23 AM)
"I also didn't see anything about the limits of this device; what speed range would require stopping, isn't it dangerous to simply stop a car's engine on the highway, what are the criteria for stopping a car, etc. gid's hacking comment is also well-taken; what if some kid stopped all the traffic on a major freeway? Messy."
(Bill Christensen 1/15/2008 7:55:11 AM)
"On the other hand, if you have trouble accepting the idea of speed control and automated vehicles, rent the movie 'I, Robot' and watch the sequence in which a passenger in a car is astonished that Will Smith would want to control a vehicle's direction and speed himself. The film perfectly visualizes the benefits of letting machines do the driving."
(Bill Christensen 1/15/2008 8:00:39 AM)
"There'll be the crucial point when lobbyists use folding money to convince legislatures to make exogenous speed controls mandatory. Gresham's Law couldn't work without plenty of other bad laws."
