Comments on Terminator Seed Ban Proposed In Canada
When you buy some seeds, you own all of the plants descended from those seeds, right? Don't be so sure. (Read
the complete story)
"Looks like a Scifi Channel "C" movie waiting to happen."
(CyberStrike 6/6/2007 8:43:47 AM) |
"This actually makes a great deal of sense.
DRM is not a good analogy for this. This is more like pay per view or software which you pay per hour of use. It allows the developer to protect his IP and also offer the product at a low price. This could work to the advantage of farmers in poor countries which would only need to raise the money to lease the crop for one year instead of needing a large sum for a license for perpetuity.
It would also foster innovation because farmers would not be invested in a single set of seeds. If something better comes along next year they could switch beacuse they did not make a long term investment.
As to the idea that this would somehow be contagious ... it flys in the face of natural selection. Plants with a suicide gene are by definition inferior to ones who live on to reproduce."
