Needle Pipe

A device that could project slivers of metal at near light speed. (Read the full article)

"Here’s the quote from David Gerrold’s “A Matter For Men” (Bantam Spectra, 1983). The needle gun in this case is clearly inspired by the famous AM=180 seen here on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTZ1AMhSkgs). Much was made during the 1980’s of the weapon’s fearsome rate of fire and (at the time unusual) laser sight. The rifle was an AM-280 with tunable laser sight. The output was set high in the UV and I had to wear an EV-helmet with retinal-focused eyepieces to see the beam. It spat high-velocity bursts of eighteen-grain needles, as many as three thousand per minute. You pointed the beam at your target and pulled the trigger. The needle burst would tear holes in a steel door. They said you could slice a man in half with a 280. I didn’t want to try. "

"Odon - I finally added your quote; sorry about the delay. See the entry for AM-280 needle rifle."
