Darwin's Children by Greg Bear:
Science Fiction Inventions, Technology and Ideas

Very likable revist to the same near-future Earth as seen in the earlier book Darwin's Radio. The book is largely independent its predecessor; it concerns the scientific and social consequences of the next stage of human evolution. Lots of drama and action; a lot to think about if you are interested in what makes us human beings. Select an invention:

Automated Sentry - automatic face recognition
A biometric device that scans facial features for identification.

E-paper Hologram
A cover image that really pops out at the viewer.

E-Sheet - disposable LCD displays
A disposable medium for reading electronic messages.

Ideator - gene identification
A computer device specifically made to help model genes and proteins for identification.

Little Bird - surveillance drone (UAV)
A remote-control "eye-in-the-sky" miniature drone plane (UAV).

Speaker Chips - talking books
Integrated circuit chips placed in books; they could read the book and advertise it.

Specimen Track
A means for transporting laboratory specimens from one workstation to another in an automated lab.

Touch Tablet
Another name for a wireless Tablet PC.
