Kirks brother was killed by a puppetmaster (called something else) and the giant alien planet killing machine in one episode was obviously based on a Berserker from the novel by the same name by Fred Saberhagen"

"David Gerrold, in his book about the making of Troubles With Tribbles, acknowledges that he most likely got the idea from subconscious memories of Heinlein's book. He also mentions that he sent a draft copy to Heinlein and Heinlein had no problems with it.
