"Foolscap was not, is not a trade name (like "Kleenex")for any brand of paper. It is a SIZE of paper, used in europe, for over five hundred years. It took its name fronm a commonly used watermark, a jester's cap. Many different makers produced foolscap, the watermark assured purchasers that the paper was to the standard size agreed by the guilds."

"Upon further research, I think you're right. The sources I used earlier indicated a probable single source for the paper, which would make the watermark a kind of brand symbol.
