Jump Through Hyperspace
Device that makes faster-than-light travel possible. (Read
the full article)
"I'm not sure if I Robot was published before foundation or not, but it tells of the origins of the jump. Much more detail, also used in his Robot series"
(John 5/13/2005 6:18:31 PM ) |
"Foundation was Asimov's first novel, I believe."
(Patsee 2/3/2009 2:47:56 PM ) |
"Patsee - I'm pretty sure that Pebble in the Sky (1950) was his first novel. I think."
(Bill Christensen 2/3/2009 5:34:20 PM ) |

Gravitational Corridors - not quite a "jump" but certainly the ability to facilitate travel through space & quickly too - the premise being that there exist "Gulf Stream like currents in outer space as well.
"Scientists studying space travel possibilities have proposed that gravitational space corridors could be used by spacecraft, in much the same way as ships use ocean currents.""
(Pooky Amsterdam 9/19/2009 6:44:12 PM ) |
"Pooky - good point. See my article Gravitational Corridors Like Space-Lanes."
(Bill Christensen 9/22/2009 6:28:25 AM ) |
"All that hyper jump stuff was used by Asimov in the 1940's when the Foundation stories were published in Astounding Science Fiction. So really belongs to the 40's."
(Al Jackson 12/31/2011 12:53:29 PM ) |
"I'm not sure that's true. As I mentioned in the text of this entry, the jump through hyperspace was written for the book, in 1951. In any case, I'd need to check it in the original magazines; SF authors had an annoying tendency to make modifications over time."
