In his novelization of the movie FANTASTIC VOYAGE, Isaac Asimov had a character mention taking a sleep-substitute pill which "knocked you out for a half-hour of solid dreaming"; it was also described as a "vacuum cleaner for the mind". It wasn't a necessarily pleasant experience, but it served when events didn't allow for a full night's sleep.

| "Just for the record... I have papers describing the use of this medication and testing it on helicopter pilots that predate Ringo's novel. Some research was done on Provigil (modafinil)and sleep as early as 1995. J Sleep Res 1995 Dec; 4(4): 229-241

| "Provigil is one of the brand names for Modafinil, a drug prescribed to narcoleptics. It is a prescription drug in the US and over the counter in the UK.
