The Sands of Mars by Arthur C. Clarke:
Science Fiction Inventions, Technology and Ideas
Likable story by a Grandmaster, I think this was Clarke's first published novel. A naive writer travels to Mars, where people are trying to establish it as a self-sufficient planet. Written before most of what we know about Mars was revealed, it has a native species as well as plants. Select
an invention:
Oxygen Weeds Plants that create oxygen on a planet with little breathable air.
