This short story was written by Michel and Jules Verne at the request of James Gordon Bennett, Jr., owner of the New York Herald. Bennett's request was that Verne try to imagine life in the United States one thousand years into the future. Scholars now believe that Verne fils wrote the whole thing, and shared the money with his father. Select an invention:
