Impact Suit

A body suit that is flexible, but upon a hard impact becomes rigid and impenetrable. (Read the full article)

"A great idea for motorcycle riders!"
( 12/6/2005 9:25:15 AM )
"This is from "The Soft Weapon" in "Neutron Star" by Larry Niven: "He [Nessus the puppeteer] went up a rise, moving slowly, though his feet wanted to dance. He was weaponless, but his suit was a kind of defense. No projectile short of a fast meteorite could harm him. Like a silicone plastic, the pressure suit was soft and malleable under gentle pressures, such as walking, but instantly became rigid all over when something struck it." And: "The top of the swell behind Nessus suddenly sparkled with harsh blue-white sunlight. ... He saw the light, he curled into a ball, and the ground swell came. It batted him like a beach ball. His rigid, form-fitting shell retained his shape. It could not prevent the ground swell from slamming him away, nor his brain from jarring under its thick skull and its extra padding.""

"will this equipment be available for the public or just the military and police?"
(virgil leonard 4/13/2006 11:12:17 AM )
"anybody falling out of the sky in one of these would still be killed.... internal organs and brain would not be supported"
(Del 5/10/2006 7:12:03 AM )
"how about falling from a 3 story building would this equipment allow for optimal protection"
(v 5/29/2006 4:21:55 PM )
"No, it might be even worse. Normally you'd be able to try and spread out your impact by landing soft and absorbing the impact with your legs, reducing the acceleration your bones and organs would have to undergo. In a suit like this, it would be like suddenly landing in a rock-hard crevice perfectly shaped like your body. The impact would be spread out, so you wouldn't be smashed, but you might die of brain impact or organ failure."

"so if it was made lighter. with more protection around the weaker areas of the body"
(the V 10/31/2006 11:33:34 AM )
"I was going to comment with the obvious, but others beat me to it. It would be worthless for full-body impacts such as falling out out of an airplane. It would be idea for pointed impacts such as bullets and knives. If it can be flexible to move and then resist a bullet, that would be invaluable."
