"This sounds similar to a book I had read in the late '80's by Leo Frankowski, "Copernick's Rebellion". The protagonist used advanced genetic manipulation to create trees that provided basic necessities [food, water, hygene] while requiring humans to live in them to provide 'fertilizer' via built-in toilets. Perhaps Vance was an inspiration to Frankowski?"
