"Well prior to CCDs, the French
had a camera electronique par le
focalisation electrostatique.
IIRC, light was focused onto a
metal halide screen, then the
emitted electrons were
accellerated by an electrostatic field and then focused onto the photographic
plate. It was good for only one image, since the vacuum tube had to be broken to remove the photographic plate.
Also, various electronic light
amplifiers, channel plate and otherwise, were used to make
astronomical images, as were
various common and exotic TV
cameras.
