"this was a wonderful compilation - and didn't blish have something to do with star trek?"

"Yes, James Blish wrote adaptations of most of the early Star Trek episodes; there are at least 12 volumes (I think they're all out of print). The writing was excellent, even if a given episode wasn't your favorite.
He also wrote the first true Star Trek novel (that is, an original story, based on the characters) - Spock Must Die. Although there were people who wondered why someone with his talent would write Star Trek adaptations (maybe he needed the money...), it makes for great light-weight sf reading. If you like Star Trek, of course."

"Blish is largely unknown today except for the Star Trek novelizations (yes, he did them for the $$$) and more's the pity. The man was brilliant and wrote like an English professor. I consider "VOR" to be his best novel. If ever there was an alien contact novel crying out to be made into a movie...it'll scare the pants off ya! The alien is TRULY ALIEN, unlike the pseudo-humanoids in most SF movies and TV shows."
