Ribbit Amphibian Cellphone Internet Mashup

Ribbit is a Silicon Valley start-up that proposes to break down the barriers between your cell phone, and all of its datastreams, and the Internet.

Ribbit provides you with a homepage on their site with all of the usual information on your cell phone - but now it's on a larger screen and is accessible even without your phone. You can get a list of phone calls and available voice mails; you can even make calls directly from the web browser.

You can use the Ribbit application to take calls directly through your web browser as well. You can receive messages on recent phone activity through Ribbit Shout, or through other text message means.

Ribbit's Amphibian software also offers what it calls "next generation caller ID" in that it can pull additional information about your next caller from the Internet. Blog posts, videos, news and any other online information sources can be used to find out about your caller before you connect.

Ribbit Amphibian is also an open platform, so get your software toolkit out, and start innovating!

Ribbit Amphibian is one of the companies that will provide us with the infrastructure to support Frederik Pohl's Joymaker, the sf predecessor to all PDAs first described in 1965.

The remote-access computer transponder called the "joymaker" is your most valuable single possession in your new life. If you can imagine a combination of telephone, credit card, alarm clock, pocket bar, reference library, and full-time secretary, you will have sketched some of the functions provided by your joymaker.

Essentially, it is a transponder connecting you with the central computing facilities of the city in which you reside on a shared-time, self-programming basis. "Shared-time" means that many other joymakers use the same central computer - in Shoggo, something like ten million of them. (Read more about Pohl's Joymaker)
