'Hug And Kiss' Baby Ankle Monitor

A Hug and Kiss monitoring system is being used in a Texas hospital to make sure that mothers get the right newborn from the nursery.

The baby wears an ankle monitor, while the mother wears a matched bracelet. When the two are brought together, a lullaby plays.

"If you get the wrong mom and baby together, it's not going to be as pleasant a sound, you're going to know you've not paired the right couple together," Susan Hauser of Baylor Frisco said. "We're very tight on our security, nothing is going to get past these ladies -- you're not going to be able to pull (anything) over their eyes."

The "Hug and Kiss" ankle monitor also keeps the newborn from leaving the floor; elevators will not allow someone carrying the child to leave until discharged.

Philip K. Dick made a very early reference to the idea of a security device that will track your whereabouts; he called it a "tattletale."

"...But if we do let you go, you must agree to carry tattletales with you at all times. Inquire of your attorney Mr. Sharp if that will be acceptable..."
