Comments on Circuit Smart Contact Lens, Presaged By Niven, Barnes and Vinge
Vernor Vinge called this one in his 2001 novella 'Fast Times at Fairmont High.' Larry Niven and Steven Barnes didn't do too badly, either. (Read the complete story)

"They're going to have to tackle the rotation issue. I've got wighted toric contact lenses for my astigmatism, and the focus will shift a teeny bit every time I blink, or the tear coat over my corneas changes even slightly such as when yawning or sneezing. If you can't picture what I'm saying, pick up your laptop or (hopefully) LCD display and rotate it back and forth about 10-15 degrees from level. That's what a contact lens HUD will look like if they can't figure out how to anchor the lens in place. If they implant the lens, I hope it's sufficiently advanced to not need frequent upgrades as technology marches on."

It turns out that scleral lenses might turn out to be be better for AJ and Sigma, who are worried about making sure they are oriented properly, because scleral lenses are larger and more rigid than today's contact lenses."
