Lies, Inc. by Philip K. Dick:
Science Fiction Inventions, Technology and Ideas

This book was written in 1964; about half of it was published that year as The Unteleported Man. Dick wrote an additional 40,000 words to complete it as a novel. Its various parts were located in the late 1970's and finally published as the full novel Dick intended.

The story revolves around a teleportation technology to a distant planet that apparently only works one way. What really happens to the people who use it? This book has so much going on in it that I scoff at any attempt to provide a complete description. Warning: this novel contains descriptions of mind-altering human experiences as well as plot convolutions that deliberately reshape the neural ganglia of the reader. Select an invention:

Anti-surveillance devices.

Cephalotropic Dart
A slim, short-range device that homes in on the brain wave pattern of the target.

Cholinesterase-Destroying Gas
Horrific anti-personnel poison.

Creditor Jet-Balloon - bane of debtors
A small, hovering device that hounds debtors.

Housefly Monitor - flies with sensors
A living fly that is outfitted with sensors for surveillance work.

Nipple-Assist
A multi-purpose electronic device worn upon the nipple.

Poison-Bearing Invisible Glove - let's shake on it
Membranous apparel for the hands, used to dispense poisons.

Robot Busboy
A robotic device able to autonomously clear tables in a restaurant.

Suicide Tooth
A false tooth containing poison.

Time-Warping Construct
A device that appears to cause alternate worlds or paraworld.

Weary Deep-Sleep
Phildickian old-sleep.
